LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Harvard men's basketball suffered a heartbreaking 72-69 defeat at Siena on Monday night, despite a late barrage of three-pointers from
Luka Sakota and
Chris Ledlum. The loss dropped the Crimson to 3-2 on the year, while the Saints picked up their first victory and moved to 1-4.
Harvard trailed, 67-58, with 55 seconds left in regulation and had its deficit trimmed to seven points on a nifty
Denham Wojcik layup. From there, Ledlum and Sakota caught fire.
A native of Brooklyn, Ledlum canned a trey with 25 ticks remaining on the game clock. A pair of Anthony Gaines free throws temporarily paused the Crimson's momentum, but Sakota answered with a triple, bringing the visitors to within three with 12 seconds to go.
Siena's Colby Rogers kept Harvard at bay with two additional free throws, but Sakota responded with yet another three, making the score, 71-69, in favor of the home side with just six seconds left.
The Crimson fouled Rogers immediately, but the guard missed his first free throw attempt and converted the second, putting Siena ahead by three points. Then with 3.6 seconds left, Ledlum threw a one-handed, overhead pass to the top of Harvard's three-point line where the pass was tipped by Siena. The loose ball was corralled by
Noah Kirkwood, who found Sakota in nearly the same spot where he made a game-tying three at Iona on Nov. 13. The junior's attempt from the right side was off the mark as time expired, sealing the loss for the Crimson.
