Hollyn Torres scored the game-winning goal in the 45
th minute as Harvard University women's soccer beat Columbia University, 2-1, in its regular season finale on Saturday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Crimson (12-2-1, 5-2-0 Ivy) scored a pair of goals in the final 18 minutes of the first half to move past the host Lions (9-6-1, 3-4-0 Ivy). Harvard – ranked No. 11 in the RPI rankings – tallied 12 wins for the second consecutive season and finished the regular season undefeated in road contests (6-0-0).
After Columbia's Nata Ramirez scored at the 27:03 mark, the Crimson equalized 38 seconds later as Harvard recorded a team goal off a drive from first-year
Hannah Bebar that deflected into the net at 27:41. Torres put Harvard in front with 41 seconds remaining in the first half as she won possession in the penalty area and blasted a left-footed shot into the left side of the goal.
Harvard Highlights
- Junior Hollyn Torres scored her second goal in as many games with her tally at the 44:19 mark after netting her first goal of the season vs. Dartmouth on Oct. 30. Torres posted her first career game-winning goal and now has three career goals.
- Junior goalkeeper Hannah Gardner improved to 10-0-0 on the season and to 5-0-0 in Ivy League play. As a team in Ivy play, the Crimson allowed just four goals in seven games.
- For the match, Harvard led in shots (12-9) and shots on goal (8-1) while the two teams each attempted five corner kicks. In the first half, the Crimson held advantages in shots (9-4), shots on goal (7-1), and corners (3-2).
- First-year Jade Rose, senior Maria DiMartinis, junior Angela Caloia, senior Lara Schenk, and senior Sophie Hirst all played the full 90 minutes.
