Women’s Rugby’s Emba ’15 Places Sixth with Team USA at Olympics

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University women's rugby alumna Cheta Emba '15 placed sixth with Team USA in women's rugby sevens competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the second-ever Olympic appearance for rugby sevens.

A native of Glen Allen, Va., Emba helped Team USA post a 3-0 record in pool play with victories over China (28-14), Japan (17-7), and Australia (14-12). The U.S. fell to Great Britain in the quarterfinals, 21-12, before bouncing back with a 33-14 win over China in the fifth-place semifinals. Closing competition, the U.S. dropped a 17-7 decision to Australia in the fifth-place game.

Emba is the first Harvard women's rugby player to compete at the Olympic Games. A dual-sport athlete at Harvard in both women's soccer and women's rugby, Emba has competed with USA Rugby since 2015, making several World Rugby 7s and Rugby World Cup appearances.

A Rugby Collegiate All-American, Emba was also a standout on the women's soccer team as a four-year letter winner. A 2013 All-Ivy selection, Emba holds the Harvard and Ivy League single-season record for goals-against with a 0.14 goals against average in 2013, helping lead the Crimson to Ivy League titles in 2013 and 2014.

Harvard University leads the Ivy League with nine U.S. Olympians. Harvard is the only non-Power Five school in the top-15 list of school contributors to Team USA.
