Women’s Soccer Opens 2021 Season with 1-0 Victory over Fairfield

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Angela Caloia scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute as Harvard University women's soccer beat Fairfield University, 1-0, in its season and home opener on Friday afternoon at Ohiri Field.
 
Playing for the first time since Nov. 9, 2019 – a span of 657 days – the Crimson (1-0-0) scored at the 9:00 mark and controlled possession for much of the game against the visiting Stags (1-2-0). First-year Josefine Hasbo tallied an assist on the game's goal while junior Hannah Gardner and sophomore Anna Karpenko combined for the shutout.
 
"It was indescribable – the atmosphere was amazing," Caloia said. "We had an incredible turnout. More than anything we have been waiting for over a year to get back on the field, so I was just bursting with happiness. I couldn't have asked for a better start."
 
Harvard Highlights
  • Junior Angela Caloia scored her first goal of the season and the seventh of her career, running onto a ball in the box and driving a shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out.
  • Making her collegiate debut, first-year Josefine Hasbo notched her first career assist, knocking the ball into the box that allowed Caloia to score.
  • In the net, junior Hannah Gardner and sophomore Anna Karpenko combined for the shutout. Gardner made three saves in the first half in her fifth career appearance while Karpenko played the second half in her collegiate debut.
  • First-year Ainsley Ahmadian led all student-athletes with seven shots and three shots on goal in the contest.
 
Game Notes
  • Harvard held advantages over Fairfield in shots (22-3), shots on goal (6-3), and corner kicks (10-0). In the second half, the Crimson led in shots (15-0), shots on goal (3-0), and corners (7-0).
  • The Crimson improved to 14-4-0 at home since 2018.
  • Harvard moved to 7-0-2 all-time vs. Fairfield.
 
What's Next?
Harvard hosts a scrimmage on Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN+) at Jordan Field. Next weekend, the Crimson travels across town to face Boston University on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+) before returning home to host Big East opponent St. John's on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+) at Ohiri Field.
