Sailing Begins Season with Pair of Top-Three Finishes

ICSA Scoring

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Returning to competition for the first time since Feb. 2020, Harvard co-ed and women's sailing got their season started with four regattas this weekend, Sept. 11-12, including two in which Harvard served as host.

The Crimson collected a pair of top-three finishes on the weekend, earning second at the Harvard Invitational and third at the Harry Anderson Trophy, hosted by Yale. Harvard also recorded a ninth-place result at the women's only Toni Deutsch Trophy, and eighth at the Charles Invitational.

In all, 18 sailors took to the water for the Crimson, including five first-time collegiate competitors.

It was a busy weekend for sophomore skipper Dylan Ascensios and junior crew Carolyn Wang who competed in both home events for Harvard. At the Charles Invitational, the tandem ranked third among A-boats with a cumulative score of 39 for the nine races, including two first-place finishes. Ascensios and Wang followed up this performance with an even better showing on Sunday, finishing first in three of the 10 races, and second in three others, to end the day atop the A-division at the Harvard Invitational with 25 points.

At the Harry Anderson trophy, the Crimson was led by the Burnes brothers, who served as skippers for the team's two boats. Eliot Burnes paired with crew Pomai Ogata to capture two first-place finishes on the way to the fifth rank in the A-division, while Henry Burnes and Chris Wang nabbed third in the B-division, aided by one first-place finish.

Up Next:
Four more regattas are on deck for Harvard next weekend, Sept. 18-19. The team will race at the Barnett Trophy, the Regis Bowl, the Hatch Brown Trophy and the NEISA Men's and Women's Singlehanded Championships.
