First Career Goals from Lung, Mackey Pace No. 19 Women’s Soccer Past Kansas, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Ava Lung and sophomore Megan Mackey each scored her first career goal as No. 19 Harvard University women's soccer beat the University of Kansas, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jordan Field.
 
The host Crimson (6-0-1) scored twice inside the final 14 minutes of the second half to top the visiting Jayhawks (5-4-1) out of the Big 12 and remain undefeated on the season, continuing its best start since 1996.
 
Lung opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, converting off a corner kick. After first-year Hannah Bebar sent in a corner from the left side, fellow first-year Nicola Golen kept the play alive for Lung to send a shot into the back of the net. With just under 22 seconds to play until halftime, Mackey doubled Harvard's lead in the 45th minute, taking feeds from Lung and Golen and burying a shot into the right side of the goal. Maggie Gagne scored Kansas' goal in the 66th minute.
 
Harvard Highlights
  • Junior Ava Lung netted her first career goal at the 31:44 mark and added an assist for her first career game with multiple points. She has tallied points in three of the Crimson's last four matches and now has three assists on the year.
  • Sophomore Megan Mackey notched her first career goal, first career points, and first collegiate game-winning goal at the 44:38 mark.
  • First-year Nicola Golen registered a pair of assists for her first collegiate game with multiple points. She has recorded three assists over her last three outings.
  • First-year Hannah Bebar posted an assist – her fourth of the season, tying for the team lead. She has tallied points in each of her last four games and has four assists over her last three contests.
  • Junior goalkeeper Hannah Gardner and sophomore goalie Anna Karpenko each made two saves in the contest. Gardner improved to 4-0-0 on the year with the win.
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (15-13), shots on goal (6-5) and corner kicks (9-2). In the first half, the Crimson held advantages in shots (9-2), shots on goal (4-2), and corners (5-1).
  • Bebar, first-year Jade Rose, and seniors Lara Schenk and Sophie Hirst each played the full 90 minutes. Schenk has played all 673 minutes on the season.
Game Notes
  • Harvard improved to 1-0-0 all-time vs. Kansas following the first meeting between the two sides.
  • At 6-0-1, Harvard continued its best start since beginning the 1996 season with an 11-0-0 record.
  • The Crimson bettered its mark to 18-3-2 since 2019.
  • Harvard improved to 3-0-1 at home in 2021 and to 16-4-1 at home since 2018.
  • The Crimson became just the second team this season to score multiple goals on the Jayhawks.
  • For the year, Harvard has outscored its opponents 18-8 and outshot them 141-54.
