Hannah Bebar scored a pair of goals, junior
Angela Caloia netted another, and No. 15/23 Harvard University women's soccer shutout the University of Pennsylvania, 3-0, in the Ivy League opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.
Entering the contest ranked No. 15 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll, No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, and No. 6 in the NCAA RPI rankings, the Crimson (7-0-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) held a 1-0 lead at halftime and extended the margin against the visiting Quakers (5-2-2, 0-1-0 Ivy) with two goals in a nine-minute span in the second half. Harvard remained undefeated on the year, continuing its best start to a season since 1996.
Bebar opened the scoring in the ninth minute, sending a low free kick from 35 yards out into the bottom left corner of the goal. Caloia doubled the hosts' advantage to 2-0 in the 63
rd minute, taking a well-placed assist from senior
Sophie Hirst and finishing a shot from inside the box. Bebar capped the scoring in the 72
nd minute, driving a shot into the back of the net off a cross from fellow first-year
Nicola Golen.
Harvard Highlights
- First-year Hannah Bebar scored her second and third goals – as well as her second game-winning goal – of the season. She now ranks second on the team with 10 points on the year behind her three goals and four assists. She has notched points in each of her last five contests. Bebar led the match with 10 shots and eight shots on goal.
- Junior Angela Caloia netted her team-best sixth goal of the year and leads the program with 14 points on the season. She has posted points in six of the Crimson's eight games this year and has netted 12 career goals.
- First-year Nicola Golen notched her fourth assist of the year and her fourth assist in her last four games. She sits in a tie for the team lead in assists.
- Senior Sophie Hirst registered her second assist of the season. She now has 10 assists in her career.
- Junior goalkeeper Hannah Gardner recorded her first shutout of the season as the Crimson posted its third clean sheet as a team on the year. Gardner notched her second collegiate shutout.
- For the match, Harvard held advantages in shots (23-5), shots on goal (14-3), and corner kicks (8-2).
- Among field players, Hirst, seniors Lara Schenk and Maria DiMartinis, and first-year Jade Rose all played the full 90 minutes.
Game Notes
- Harvard improved to 22-7-3 all-time vs. Penn. The Crimson is 6-1-1 in its last eight meetings with the Quakers.
- At 7-0-1, Harvard continued its best season start since beginning the 1996 campaign with an 11-0-0 mark.
