CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Powered by double-digit points from five different players, including 18 from junior
McKenzie Forbes, the Harvard women's basketball team (8-9, 2-3 Ivy) took down Dartmouth (1-14, 0-3 Ivy), 96-62, today at Lavietes Pavilion.
Five Crimson players recorded double-digit points against the Big Green, with Forbes putting up a team-best 18. Senior
Tess Sussman and first-year
Harmoni Turner posted 17, while junior
Annie Stritzel recorded 14 and sophomore
Lola Mullaney added 11. Stritzel led the way defensively with five rebounds, while Turner, Sussman and
Elle Stauffer each grabbed four. Turner added three steals to her tally as well, while Forbes, Stritzel and junior
Maggie McCarthy each had two.
Firing on all cylinders to kick off the game, early buckets from Forbes, Turner, Mullaney and Sussman catapulted the Crimson out to an early 10-2 lead. Building on its success out of a Dartmouth timeout, five quick points from Sussman pushed the Crimson edge to 15-2 halfway through the first quarter. Continuing its dominance on both ends of the glass, Harvard went into the break boasting a commanding 29-8 advantage, punctuated by a jaw-dropping three-quarter court buzzer beater by Stritzel.
Despite some pushback from Dartmouth shooters to kick off the second quarter, Harvard kept the Big Green at bay and maintained its dominant lead. Up by as many as 24 points, the Crimson was fully in control going into the half, with the scoreboard reading 53-28.
Taking advantage of its prowess beyond the arc, the Crimson started off the third quarter answering a Dartmouth triple with three of its own, extending its margin to 64-32 halfway through the period. While success in the paint allowed Dartmouth to cut into the Crimson's advantage, a timely three from first-year
Elena Rodriguez shut down any momentum that might have been had, ensuring the Crimson a 72-43 edge going into the fourth quarter.
Closing out the game with textbook efficiency, the Crimson outscored Dartmouth 15-10 to begin the fourth quarter, pushing its lead to 87-53 with just five minutes left in the contest. To close out the final frame, Harvard's offense continued its red-hot production while its stifling defense held Dartmouth to just nine more points, securing the 96-62 win for the Crimson.
