WEST POINT, NY – The Crimson closed out competition at the ITA Northeast Regionals today with five more wins to send all of their players to the ITA Super Regionals on October 21-24.
Alan Yim,
David Lins,
Masato Perera,
Melchior Delloye, and
Valdemar Pape all contributed to a 15-0 weekend record for the Crimson.
"I am super proud of all the guys this weekend. They all competed with a lot of grit and resilience and that's what it takes to come away with a 15-0 singles record in a tournament," Coach
Sanam Singh said. "The three first-years showed great maturity and played fearless tennis culminating to their best performance on the final day to seal their spot in the super regionals."
Lins, Delloye, and Pape took care of their opponents in straight sets today. Lins defeated fellow Ivy League player, Waleed Qadir (Dartmouth), 6-1, 6-2. Delloye yielded a similar result (6-2, 6-1) in his defeat of Sachin Palta (Columbia). Pape similarly defeated Jose Pablo Davila (Siena), 6-3, 6-1.
Yim and Perera both pulled out their wins in three sets. Despite falling in the first set (3-6), Yim battled back against Augstin Suarez (Siena) and captured the final two sets (6-1, 7-5). Perera took the first set (7-5) and narrowly fell in tiebreakers in the second set (7
7-6
5) to Alexander Koong (Brown) but was able to bounce back and take the final set (6-4) to secure the fifth and final win of the day for the Crimson.
Singh touched specifically on the veterans of the group saying, "
Alan Yim fought through two tough three setters and I couldn't be more proud of him especially after missing a whole year with an ACL injury.
David Lins was flawless this weekend and got through all his matches without dropping a set." Singh continued, "Overall, it was a great weekend and we couldn't be happier to have all five guys qualify for the super regionals and have a chance to compete in a couple weeks on our home courts."
With the round of 16 wins, all five Crimson players will move on to compete in the ITA Super Regionals that will be hosted on home soil in two weekends. 11 of the 32 players competing at the super regional will be from Harvard with the five qualifiers joining Harvard's four automatic qualifiers and two host wild card qualifiers.
Next Up
The Crimson will travel to Providence, RI next weekend, October 15-16, to compete in the Brown Invitational.
