PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Despite a solid effort against a top-10 team, No. 15 Harvard field hockey (7-3) fell to 10
th-ranked St. Joseph's (8-3) in rainy conditions at Ellen Ryan Field.
Harvard Highlights
In the early going, Harvard applied most of the pressure, and nearly broke through for a score late in the first quarter.
On a penalty corner, first-year
Bronte-May Brough fired a shot clean on goal that was kicked away by St. Joseph's goalkeeper Robin Bleekemolen (three saves).
The host Hawks struck first on their lone penalty corner of the first half early in the second quarter, as Lily Santi redirected a corner past Harvard goalkeeper
Ellie Shahbo (four saves) at the 7:24 mark.
Shahbo came up with a big stop a few moments later, kicking away a shot by Leigh James in a one-on-one situation with just over five minutes to go in the quarter.
Harvard had its best chances of the half in the closing minutes of the second quarter on two consecutive penalty corners. After Harvard maintained possession after the second penalty corner, a pass from
Emily Guckian into the circle set up a great chance for
Lucy Leel that Bleekmolen stopped with her right pad.
The two teams continued back and forth play in the second half. Shahbo came up with a diving stick stop on a St. Joseph's penalty corner with just over four minutes to go in the third quarter.
The Crimson pulled Shahbo out of the net for an extra field player late in the fourth quarter, but could not find the goal to even the game.
