Cullen MacNeil recorded his first collegiate shutout, and Harvard University men's soccer bested Boston University, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
In its final non-league road game of the season, the Crimson (5-4-1) received the game winner from Gutierrez in the 25
th minute off assists from juniors
Kaoru Fujiwara and
James Fahmy, and the visitors did not allow the host Terriers (2-3-6) to register a shot on goal in the contest.
Harvard Highlights
- Junior Ale Gutierrez scored his third goal of the season and fourth career goal in the 25th minute. He posted his second game-winning goal of the season after also netting the game-winner vs. Fairfield on Sept. 24.
- Junior James Fahmy notched his third assist of the season. He has compiled points in four of his last seven matches. Fahmy has now tallied six career assists.
- Junior Kaoru Fujiwara registered his first point of his collegiate career with his assist.
- First-year goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil recorded his first career shutout and first career victory. The result stood as Harvard's third clean sheet as a team this season.
- Among the Crimson's field players, sophomore Jan Riecke and junior Nik White both played the full 90 minutes. Riecke has played all 900 minutes on the season.
- For the match, Harvard led in shots on goal (3-0).
- Harvard improved to 28-16-8 all-time vs. BU.
How It Happened
- Junior Ale Gutierrez opened the scoring at the 24:56 mark. After junior Kaoru Fujiwara executed a give-and-go with junior James Fahmy, Fujiwara played a pass to the top of the box for a waiting Gutierrez, who turned and drove a strike into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 25th minute.
- The Crimson defense did not allow the Terriers to record a shot on goal in the first half. In the opening 45 minutes, Harvard held advantages in shots on goal (1-0) and corner kicks (1-0) while BU led in shots (4-2).
- Harvard again held the Terriers without a shot on goal in the second half. In the final 45 minutes, the Crimson led in shots on goal (2-0), both teams took six shots, and BU held a 2-0 edge in corners.
- For the match, Harvard led in shots on goal (3-0) while BU held slight margins in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (2-1).
