Jelani Machen returned a blocked punt for a touchdown as Harvard University football beat Cornell University, 35-28, on Friday night at Schoellkopf Field in a game nationally televised on ESPNU.

The Crimson (3-1, 2-0 Ivy) took a 13-7 lead at halftime behind Machen's punt return touchdown and a pair of field goals from senior kicker
Jonah Lipel. After the host Big Red (2-2, 0-2 Ivy) took a 14-13 edge early in the third quarter, Harvard scored three of the game's next four scores as Neville and Woods both grabbed receiving touchdowns, and Borguet capped the Crimson's scoring to give the visitors a 35-21 advantage with 2:50 remaining.

Harvard became the first Ivy League team to move to 2-0 in conference play on the season.
Harvard Highlights
- Senior running back Aidan Borguet ran for a season-high 163 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries for a 5.8 yard per carry average. He ran for over 100 yards for the third time this season. Borguet posted his sixth rushing score of the year and seventh overall TD of the season. He has rushed for a touchdown in all four games in 2022.
- Senior quarterback Charlie Dean completed 15-of-29 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. He has thrown a touchdown in all four games and did not throw an interception for the third straight game. Dean tossed for over 200 yards for the third straight contest.
- Junior tight end Tyler Neville caught three balls for 35 yards and his first career touchdown.
- Sophomore wide receiver Scott Woods II grabbed a 10-yard receiving touchdown for his first collegiate TD.
- Senior wide receiver Kym Wimberly snagged five passes for 82 yards. He has tallied over 75 receiving yards in all four games this season.
- Sophomore receiver Ledger Hatch tallied five catches for 71 yards.
- Junior Jelani Machen scored the Crimson's first touchdown of the game, recovering a blocked punt from senior Kobe Joseph and returning it 17 yards for the score.
- Senior kicker Jonah Lipel went 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points. He connected on field goals from 32 and 25 yards for his first two field goals of the year. For the year, Lipel has made 15-of-15 extra points.
- Following the Crimson's final touchdown, senior wide receiver Joe Young threw a two-point conversion pass to Neville following a reverse.
- Senior defensive lineman Truman Jones totaled 4.0 tackles for loss and a sack in the game. He notched a sack for the second straight contest.
- Senior defensive back Alex Washington and senior linebacker Jack McGowan each registered a team-high six tackles.
- As a team, Harvard held advantages in rushing yards (177-65) and total offense (385-250).

How It Happened
- The Big Red's Jameson Wang ran in a one-yard touchdown with 2:55 left in the first quarter for the game's opening score, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead following an 18-play, 89-yard drive in 10:01.
- Senior kicker Jonah Lipel got the Crimson on the scoreboard, connecting on a 32-yard field goal with 10:13 to go in the second quarter. His first field goal of the season brought Harvard within 7-3. Sophomore wide receiver Ledger Hatch made two catches for 33 yards on the drive.
- The Crimson took its first lead of the game as senior Kobe Joseph broke through for a punt block, and junior Jelani Machen returned the ball 17 yards for the touchdown, giving Harvard a 10-7 advantage with 8:06 to go in the second quarter.
- Closing out the first half's scoring, Lipel connected on a 25-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in the second quarter, pushing Harvard ahead 13-7 at the break. Senior defensive lineman Truman Jones came up with a sack on Cornell's preceding possession to help set up the scoring drive.
- Cornell opened the second half's scoring as Wang ran the ball in from six yards out, pushing the hosts ahead 14-13 with 10:58 to go in the third quarter.
- Harvard responded just over three minutes later as senior quarterback Charlie Dean found junior tight end Tyler Neville for a three-yard touchdown, giving the Crimson back the lead at 20-14 with 7:05 left in the third. Senior wide receiver Kym Wimberly made a 37-yard catch in traffic to help catalyze a drive that went nine plays and 75 yards in 3:53.
- The Crimson extended its lead to 27-14 with 14:55 left in the fourth quarter as Dean connected with sophomore wide receiver Scott Woods II for a 10-yard touchdown. Dean's second TD of the game capped a 10-play, 67-yard drive in 3:55 which included a 32-yard reception from Wimberly.
- Cornell cut into the margin with 9:03 to play as Wang linked up with Thomas Glover on a 10-yard touchdown to pull the Big Red within 27-21.
- Senior running back Aidan Borguet tallied his sixth rushing touchdown of the season, scoring from two yards out to make the score 35-21 with 2:50 remaining, finishing off an 11-play, 71-yard drive in 6:02. On the PAT, senior wide receiver Joe Young connected within Neville following a reverse for the two-point conversion.
- Wang scored the game's final touchdown as he added a one-yard rushing score with 0:57 to go, bringing the Big Red within 35-28 before the Crimson recovered the ensuing onside kick.
