Men’s Soccer Uses Second-Half Surge to Top Dartmouth in Regular Season Finale, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Alessandro Arlotti, junior James Fahmy, and first-year Matus Vician all scored goals in the second half, senior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson posted the shutout, and Harvard University men's soccer defeated Dartmouth College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field in its regular season finale on Senior Day.
 
The Crimson (9-4-4, 3-1-3 Ivy) closed the regular season unbeaten in its last eight games (5-0-3) and undefeated in its last six Ivy League contests (3-0-3). With its victory over the Big Green (6-4-3, 3-4-0 Ivy), Harvard claimed third place in the Ivy League standings with 12 points, marking its highest finish in the conference table since 2015.
 
After a scoreless first half, the Crimson struck in the 47th minute (Arlotti), 58th minute (Fahmy), and 79th minute (Vician) and kept the Big Green off the scoreboard to post its sixth team shutout of the season. Harvard concluded the regular season with a 7-1-1 record at home and tallied five games with three or more goals.

Harvard Highlights

  • Sophomore Alessandro Arlotti scored his fifth goal of the season in the 47th minute and now has 18 points on the year on five goals and eight assists. He has tallied points in five straight games. In conference play, he led the team in points (nine) and goals (three).
  • Junior Willem Ebbinge – who came into the game ranked fifth in the NCAA in assists per game – posted two assists in the contest. He now has 11 assists and 17 points on the year. He has registered points in 13 of his 16 games played. He notched two assists in a game for the first time this year.
  • Junior James Fahmy netted his third goal of the season in the 58th minute and now has nine points on the year. He scored goals in back-to-back games to close the regular season.
  • First-year Matus Vician recorded his third goal of the season in the 79th minute. He closed the regular season with nine points.
  • Junior Kaoru Fujiwara posted his second assist of the season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson made a season-high seven saves in his third shutout of the season. He tallied six or more saves in each of his last three games. As a team, Harvard posted his sixth clean sheet of the year.
  • Among Harvard's field players, sophomores Jan Riecke and Ludovico Rollo both played the full 90 minutes. Riecke played 1,523 of a possible 1,530 minutes in the regular season.
  • For the match, Harvard held advantages in shots on goal (8-7) and corner kicks (4-3) while both teams took 14 shots.
  • Harvard improved to 46-39-10 all-time vs. Dartmouth.
  • Prior to the game, the Crimson honored its senior class for its hard work and dedication to the program.
 

How It Happened

  • The two teams played to a scoreless first half with Nilsson making three saves in the opening 45 minutes. Harvard led in corner kicks (2-1) while Dartmouth held slight leads in shots (7-4), shots on goal (3-2).
  • Sophomore Alessandro Arlotti opened the scoring in the 47th minute as he converted off an assist from junior Willem Ebbinge. After Ebbinge took a quick free kick and sent a ball into the box, an oncoming Arlotti slipped a shot past the goalkeeper at the 46:41 mark.
  • Ebbinge again factored into the scoring on the Crimson's second goal. Taking a quick corner in the 47th minute from the left side, Ebbinge fed a ball to junior James Fahmy who tapped a shot into the goal at 78:13.
  • First-year Matus Vician closed the scoring in the 79th minute, finding the back of the net at the 78:13 mark off an assist from junior Kaoru Fujiwara. After Fujiwara regained possession and sent a pass to Vician on the right side, Vician blasted a shot along the turf and into the net.
  • The Crimson created the better of the second half's chances, holding edges in shots (10-7) and shots on goal (6-4) while both teams took two corner kicks.
