Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 12/13 Men's Ice Hockey Earns Sixth Straight Victory to Start Year With 5-1 Win at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Matthew Coronato had a goal and two assists, and junior forward Sean Farrell added two goals to help lift No. 12/13 Harvard men's ice hockey (6-0-0, 6-0-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 5-1 win at Union (5-8-1, 3-3-0 ECAC Hockey) on Saturday night (Nov. 12) at Messa Rink.

Derek Mullahy made 20 saves to earn the win in net for Harvard, which won its sixth straight game to open the year for the second time in the last three seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Harvard peppered Union goaltender Connor Murphy in the first period at even strength, but it was on a Union power play that the Crimson broke through for the first goal of the game.

An errant Union pass went right to Farrell at the left circle, and in a one-on-one down low with Murphy, he found the back of the net at 10:26 for Harvard's fourth shorthanded goal of the season.

Early in the second period, Harvard extended its lead to two, cashing in after a long shift in the Union zone. Coronato cut behind the Union net and into the slot, firing a quick shot that deflected off the skate of first-year forward Joe Miller and into the net at 6:40 to make it 2-0.

Union responded with a goal from Nate Hanley just over a minute later to cut the Harvard lead to one at 7:47.

A key moment in the game came later in the period, as major penalties on Harvard's Jack Bar and Union's Josh Nixon set up five minutes of 4-on-4 for the Crimson starting at 16:08 of the second period.

Harvard scored twice late in the second to build a comfortable lead.

Farrell notched his second goal of the game at 16:37, taking a pass off the half wall from Coronato and hitting the top corner to make it 3-1.

Then with less than a minute to play in the third, Coronato set up in the slot and senior defenseman Henry Thrun made a great pass for a tap in goal at 19:16.

Senior forward Baker Shore scored his first goal of the season at 13:56 of the third to round out the scoring for Harvard.
