ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore forward
Matthew Coronato scored a shorthanded goal, and senior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made a season high 43 saves, but No. 9/9 Harvard men's ice hockey (7-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season in a 4-1 defeat at No. 5/5 Michigan (10-5-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Michigan scored early and late in the first period to take a two-goal lead into the first break. Mark Estapa put in a rebound at 2:03.
Then with 30 seconds to play in the frame, Mackie Samoskevich scored from the high slot to make it 2-0.
Harvard got stronger as the game went on and generated several quality scoring chances in the second period. At the eight-minute mark, junior forward
Sean Farrell kept the puck on a 2-on-1 chance and fired a shot off the left pad of Erik Portillo (39 saves).
Then late in the period, junior forward
Alex Laferriere toe dragged around a defender and shot quickly, forcing Portillo to make a left skate stop.
Harvard scored its fifth shorthanded goal of the season early in the third period, as senior defenseman
Henry Thrun cut to the net on a 2-on-1 rush. His initial shot was stopped, but Coronato was there to put in the rebound at 1:42.
Harvard continued to pile up shots and scoring chances with the game at 2-1, but it was Michigan that would score next, as Rutger McGroarty's wrist shot at 13:07 made it a two goal game once again.
Seamus Casey scored an empty netter for Michigan at 18:18 to seal the win for the home team.
GAME NOTES
- Harvard and Michigan combined for 87 shots in the contest, with the Wolverines outshooting the Crimson, 47-40.
- Harvard finished the night a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and is now 27-for-28 (96.4%) on the year on the PK. Harvard went 0-for-4 on the power play.
- Senior defenseman Henry Thrun (assist) has points in four straight games (3-3-6). Junior forward Sean Farrell (assist), also has points in four straight games (3-6-9) and now leads the team with 13 points (4-9-13) on the year.
