Men’s Basketball Uses Balanced Effort on Both Ends to Top Holy Cross, 72-38

WORCESTER, Mass. – A total of 11 Crimson student-athletes scored points and the visitors held the Crusaders under 33 percent shooting in the contest as Harvard University men's basketball topped Holy Cross, 72-38, on Wednesday night at the Hart Center.
 
The Crimson (6-2) closed the first half on a 19-6 run to take a 33-17 halftime lead, scored the first eight points of the second half, and used a 12-3 run to take a 30-point edge with under four minutes to play on its way to the road victory over the Crusaders (2-6).
 
Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum scored a game-high 18 points with six rebounds, senior guard Luka Sakota netted 13 points, and junior guard Sam Silverstein grabbed a game and career-high 10 rebounds. The Crimson led in bench points (23-6), points off turnovers (21-9), points in the paint (42-18), and second-chance points (18-2).

Harvard Highlights

  • A total of 11 Crimson student-athletes scored points in the game with all 11 scorers making at least one field goal.
  • Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum posted a game-high 18 points alongside six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. He scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season and led the team in scoring for the fifth time this year.
  • Senior guard Luka Sakota netted 13 points, made 3-of-5 3-pointers, and added three boards and two steals. He scored in double figures for the fourth time this year and connected on three triples for the second time.
  • Sophomore guard Evan Nelson tallied nine points, five rebounds, a game-best four assists, and three steals, while making 4-of-7 field goals.
  • Junior guard Sam Silverstein registered game highs in rebounds (10), assists (four), and steals (four). He grabbed double-digit boards for the first time in his career.
  • Junior forward Josh Hemmings posted seven points and eight rebounds, junior forward Justice Ajogbor compiled six points and five rebounds, and senior guard Idan Tretout added five points and three boards.
  • Harvard limited Holy Cross to 16-of-49 field goals (32.7 percent).
  • Harvard held advantages in rebounds (53-28), offensive boards (22-4), assists (15-8), and steals (14-7).
  • The Crimson led in bench points (23-6), points off turnovers (21-9), points in the paint (42-18), and second-chance points (18-2).
 

How It Happened

  • After Holy Cross opened the game with a 5-0 lead, the Crimson used a 14-2 run to move ahead 14-7 with 9:23 to go in the first half. A 3-pointer from Ledlum started the run before four points from Hemmings, a dunk from first-year forward Chisom Okpara, and a triple from sophomore guard Tyler Simon helped cap the spurt.
  • Maintaining a 14-11 lead, the Crimson outscored the Crusaders 19-6 over the final 7:26 of the opening frame to bring a 33-17 margin into the locker room.
  • That stretch included an 11-0 run for Harvard from the 5:41 to the 1:48 marks of the period. Nelson scored five consecutive points during the spurt with a 3-pointer and a steal-and-score prior to a dunk from Ajogbor closing the run.
  • A 3-pointer from Sakota and two free throws from Ledlum allowed the Crimson to take a 16-point lead – its largest edge of the stanza – into halftime.
  • Harvard scored the first eight points of the second half to move ahead 41-17 with 15:59 to go. Nelson netted four points during the burst.
  • A layup from Hemmings made the margin 47-21 with 12:22 left.
  • The Crimson used a 12-3 run to extend a 52-31 edge to a 64-34 advantage – its first 30-point lead of the game – with 3:54 left. During the run, Sakota hit a 3-pointer and Ledlum converted a 3-point play.
  • Inside of the final 2:30, first-year center Matt Filipowski and first-year guard Greg Cooper each scored his first career basket. 

Game Notes

  • Harvard improved to 3-1 in true road games on the year.
  • The Crimson bettered its record to 49-19 against opponents from the state of Massachusetts under Tommy Amaker, The Thomas G. Stemberg '71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Basketball. Harvard improved to 12-3 against teams from the Bay State since 2018-19.
  • The Crimson moved to 19-6 in its last 25 non-league games and to 9-4 in its last 13 true non-league road games.
