HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior forward
Sean Farrell had two goals and an assist, and senior defenseman
Henry Thrun added two assists, but No. 7/9 Harvard men's ice hockey (8-2-1, 7-1-0 ECACH) suffered its first league loss of the season in a 6-4 setback at Colgate (8-9-1, 6-2-0 ECACH).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate got out to a quick start, scoring early on a long shot from the point through traffic that Matt Verboon deflected in at 1:34.
First-year goaltender
Aku Koskenvuo (28 saves) was solid the rest of the period as Harvard found its skating legs, stopping the next 11 shots he faced in the frame.
Harvard played a dominant opening 10 minutes of the second period, with Farrell potting two goals in 34 seconds to give the Crimson the lead.
After Harvard killed off an early penalty to
Matthew Coronato, a great two-man forecheck by Farrell and
Baker Shore forced a Colgate turnover. Shore fed Farrell for a one-timer into the top corner at 2:04 of the middle frame to tie the game.
On the next shift, sophomore defenseman
Ian Moore's shot from straightaway was tipped past Gylander by Farrell at 2:38 to make it 2-1.
A great shift by Harvard's third line led to the Crimson's third goal, as first-year forward
Marek Hejduk curled into the high slot and beat Gylander through a screen in front at 10:23 to put the Crimson up two.
Colgate responded with a power play goal at 11:53 from Alex Young.
Colgate tied it on another power play goal minutes later from Young at 13:51 to set up a back and forth third period.
At :31 of the final frame, Colgate's Alex DiPaolo scored off a quick faceoff play to give the Raiders the lead. Then the Raiders added a shorthanded goal from Colton Young to make it 5-3 at 9:25, a play that was reviewed because Young bowled into Koskenvuo before the puck crossed the line.
Harvard responded with a quick power play goal, as junior forward
Alex Laferriere redirected a shot from Thrun past Gylander at 9:51.
But Colgate would not allow the tying score, sending the Crimson to its first league loss.
