BOSTON, Mass. – Down by two goals heading into the third period, Harvard men's ice hockey (13-8-3) rallied for a 3-3 tie against Boston College (10-15-5) in the 2022 Beanpot consolation on Monday night (Feb. 14) at TD Garden.
First-year forward
Alex Gaffney and senior forward
Jack Donato scored third period goals for the Crimson to help Harvard rally.
Sophomore goaltender
Derek Mullahy made 26 saves in net, as Harvard outshot BC 35-29 for the night.
The Crimson killed off an early major penalty in the opening period to
Austin Wong, but the Eagles scored shortly after at even strength to take an early 1-0 lead.
A pass off the end wall led to a one-timer for Liam Izyk in close at 8:24 to give the Eagles the early lead.
The Crimson tied the game late in the second period on the penalty kill, as a shorthanded 2-on-1 produced a goal for first-year forward
Zakary Karpa, his fifth of the year. First-year forward
Matthew Coronato found Karpa all alone down the middle, and Karpa fired a shot through BC goaltender Eric Dop to tie the game at 1-1 at 12:24.
But on the same power play, BC scored on a one-timer off the stick of Colby Ambrosio at 13:12 to regain the lead.
An unfortunate deflection off a Harvard skate gave BC a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.
But Harvard responded early in the third period on Gaffney's goal to cut the lead to one. A high-low pass from
Alex Laferriere found the stick of Gaffney for a tap-in goal at 1:05 to make it a 3-2 game.
Mullahy made a fantastic stop on Colby Ambrosio's redirection at 8:31 of the third.
Then late in the period, Donato's backhander tied the score with 4:59 to play to gave Harvard a well-earned result.
