TROY, N.Y. – Four different Crimson found the back of the net, including a first-year and two sophomores, as No. 7/7 Harvard (20-7-1, 15-5-1) began its final regular season road trip with a 4-1 victory at Rensselaer (9-22-0, 5-16-0) on Friday night at Houston Field House.
The win, coupled with Yale's simultaneous loss to Quinnipiac, vaults Harvard back into first place in the ECAC Hockey regular season standings with just one game remaining. The Crimson will have a chance to clinch its eighth ECAC Hockey regular season title with a win tomorrow at Union.
Senior
Becca Gilmore joined sophomores
Shannon Hollands and
Courtney Hyland, along with first-year forward
Taze Thompson, as Crimson goal scorers.
Lindsay Reed made 18 saves and moved to 5-4-0 in net.
After missing the team's last three games, Hollands made an immediate impact in her return to the ice, scoring the game's first goal 6:07 in. The score came off a two-on-one rush as Hollands elected to keep the puck and beat Engineers' goalie Amanda Rampado near-post with a perfectly placed wrister. Later in the opening period, Gilmore picked up a goal just 21 seconds into Harvard's first power-play of the night, rifling a shot off the post and in.
Harvard added two more goals in the game's second frame. First it was sophomore
Courtney Hyland, the beneficiary of a shot from
Taze Thompson which slipped through Rampado's pads before Hyland tapped the puck across the goal line to increase the lead to three. Thompson would then get a goal of her own with less than two minutes left in the period and Harvard on the power-play. The first-year was able to get her stick on a point-shot from Della Rovere, deflecting the puck five-hole for her eighth goal of the season.
Rensselaer got one goal back in the final period when Asiah Taylor-Walters notched her second of the season to cut the Harvard lead to 4-1. Taylor-Walters goal would be the final tally of the night, however, as the Crimson was able to close out a comfortable victory.
