CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Claiming a fourth-straight Ivy League win, the Harvard women's basketball team (11-9, 5-3 Ivy) topped Brown (5-14, 0-7 Ivy), 77-73, tonight at Lavietes Pavilion.
Three Crimson players recorded double-digit points tonight, led by junior
McKenzie Forbes with 19. First-year
Harmoni Turner and sophomore
Lola Mullaney followed closely behind with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Turner led on both ends of the court, registering a double-double by adding a team-high 11 rebounds to her tally. Junior
Maggie McCarthy provided support on the defensive end as well with nine boards and five steals.
Jumping out to an early 9-0 lead, the Crimson's smothering defense held Brown scoreless through the first three minutes of the game. While the Bears finally broke the seal offensively, Harvard did not take its foot off the gas, ensuring a healthy 21-9 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. However, pushback from Brown shooters to close out the period narrowed the lead, with Harvard up 24-19 going into the second quarter.
While both teams started off cold to kick off the second quarter, threes from Mullaney and
Annie Stritzel kickstarted the scoring for the Crimson to extend the lead to 29-23 three minutes in. Despite this push, strong scoring in the paint from Brown kept the score close, with the Bears closing the lead to just two points halfway through the period at 31-29. Trading baskets to end the quarter, the Crimson was able to pull away slightly and went into the half up 41-36.
Mullaney halted a 6-2 run by the Bears at the start of the third quarter with a triple to enter double-digit points. A 13-2 run from the Crimson pushed its advantage to 56-44 midway through the frame, highlighted by two triples from Forbes. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with two each from
Maddie Stuhlreyer and Turner, to help Harvard maintain its double figure edge at 66-56 heading into the final quarter.
Forbes sank her third triple of the game to begin the fourth quarter, before Brown closed the gap with four-straight baskets to come within four at 69-65. After another three-pointer from Forbes, Brown went on a 7-2 run to make it a two-point game with less than two minutes remaining. A pair of free throws would cut the Bear's deficit to two once more at 75-73. With 10 seconds left on the clock, Stritzel stole the ball in the Crimson's defensive zone to give Harvard final possession and hold on to clinch the 77-73 victory.
