Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 6/6 Women’s Hockey Clinches Ivy League with 6-3 Win at Cornell

ITHICA, N.Y. – No. 6/6 Harvard (17-6-0, 13-4-0 ECAC Hockey) used a strong third period to bury rival Cornell (9-10-2, 7-7-1 ECAC Hockey), 6-3, on Saturday (Feb. 5) afternoon, sealing the program's 12th Ivy League crown, and first since 2015, in the process.

Kristin Della Rovere, Becca Gilmore and Anne Bloomer each registered three points at Lynah Rink as the Crimson earned the regular season sweep against the Big Red for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign. Lindsay Reed turned aside 29 shots in goal on her way to her third win of the season.

Period number one featured one goal for each team. Harvard's Gilmore was first to score at 7:24 after a Cornell turnover in its defense zone allowed Bloomer to find Gilmore alone in front of the goal, where the senior would make no mistake on the finish. The Big Red soon pulled even, converting on its first power-play opportunity of the game when Kaitlin Jockims netted her fourth of the year, tying the score at 12:35 in the opening period.

Harvard captured the lead back in period number two with a pair of goals. First it was Della Rovere on the power-play, snapping a wrister right off an offensive zone face-off that deflected off a Big Red defender and into the net at 1:55. Maryna Macdonald was next to strike, converting on a long-range wrist-shot just seconds after a Crimson power-play had expired, putting the Crimson ahead, 3-1. Late in the period, Cornell pulled back to within one as Rory Guilday picked up her fifth goal of the year, making it 3-2 heading to the final frame.

Early in the third period, the Big Red evened the score on a goal from Lily Dilianedis at 2:54. With momentum seemingly shifting towards the home team, Harvard swung things back in its favor when Gilmore scored the go-ahead goal at 7:03. Gilmore banked the puck off a Cornell defender from the right of the goal mouth for what was her second score of the game. Kyra Willoughby added to the lead with another power-play strike as the junior defender beat Big Red goalie Lindsay Browning with a blistering slap-shot from just inside the blue line at 9:01.

With its goalie pulled and two Crimson in the penalty box, the Big Red looked to turn things around late, but Emma Buckles ended the home team's hopes with an empty-net goal that traveled nearly the full length of the ice before finding the center of the cage.
