LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior
Logan Bravo hit his first home run of the season, and the Crimson pitchers held the Bruins to just two runs through 10 innings, but Harvard University baseball fell to UCLA, 3-2, in 11 innings in the series finale at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Playing in the rubber game of a three-game set after Harvard took game two, 5-0, the Crimson (8-7) erased a 2-0 deficit with runs in the sixth and eighth innings before the host Bruins (12-7) plated a run in the bottom of the 11
th to escape with the win.
Bravo hit his third career home run and finished the game with two hits, a homer, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. On the mound, four Harvard relievers – first-year
Tanner Smith and sophomores
Uday Narottam,
Chris Clark, and
Jay Driver – combined to not allow a run between the sixth and 10
th innings.
After UCLA plated runs in the bottom of the first and fifth innings to go ahead 2-0, Harvard answered in the top of the sixth as Bravo launched a homer of the wall in left field to cut the margin to 2-1. The Crimson tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the eighth as junior
Will Jacobsen hit a single up the middle to score Bravo. The Bruins took the game in the 11
th inning, scoring a run on a balk.
Harvard Highlights
- Junior first baseman Logan Bravo finished the game 2-for-5 with a home run, double, RBI, and two runs scored. He posted his eighth multi-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He leads the team with seven doubles on the season.
- Junior third baseman Will Jacobsen drove in a run with a single up the middle in the top of the eighth, forcing extra innings.
- Sophomore shortstop Jake Berger tallied a hit in the game, pushing his hit streak to six games. He has reached base safely in 10 straight games.
- First-year second baseman George Cooper notched a hit for the seventh straight game.
- Sophomore left-handed pitcher Uday Narottam tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, permitting no runs, no hits, and no walks with three strikeouts. He has hurled 9.0 innings on the year without allowing a run.
- Sophomore right-handed reliever Jay Driver threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts against one walk. He came on in the bottom of the ninth to get two outs with the bases loaded. For the year, he has thrown 9.1 innings without allowing a run with 17 strikeouts to one walk.
- Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark threw 1.1 innings without giving up a run and tallying three strikeouts.
