Conigliaro Wins 165-Pound Weight Class to Pace Wrestling at EIWA Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Philip Conigliaro won the 165-pound weight class, and three other Crimson wrestlers earned place-winner status as Harvard University wrestling closed competition at the 118th EIWA Championships on Sunday at Cornell University's Newman Arena.
 
A native of Dedham, Mass. Conigliaro went 4-0 at the tournament – including 2-0 marks on both days one and two – on his way to the title, becoming the Crimson's 23rd EIWA champion in program history and the team's first since 2016. The No. 3 seed at 165, Conigliaro topped the No. 2 seed in the semifinals and the No. 4 seed in the first-place match. Conigliaro clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships with his results on the weekend.
 
Junior Beau Bayless placed fifth at 125 pounds, closing the weekend with a 4-2 record. Senior Lukus Stricker came in seventh at 149 pounds behind a 3-2 mark, and junior Trevor Tarsi finished eighth at 157 pounds.
 
In the team standings, Harvard placed ninth out of 17 schools with 49 points. Cornell took the team title with 153 points.

Harvard Highlights

  • Sophomore Philip Conigliaro – the No. 3 seed at 165 – beat No.2 seed Zach Hartman of Bucknell in the semifinals, 5-2, and defeated No. 4 seed Joshua Ogunsanya of Columbia, 8-3, in the first-place match.
  • Conigliaro earned the 23rd EIWA title in program history and became the team's first EIWA champion since Devon Gobbo '16 won the 165-pound title in 2016. Conigliaro placed at EIWAs for the second time in his career after finishing third in 2020.
  • Conigliaro – ranked No. 6 in the NCAA RPI, No. 11 in the NCAA Coaches Rankings, and No. 13 in Intermat's rankings at 165 – improved to 19-4 on the season behind his 4-0 weekend.
  • Junior Beau Bayless – the No. 8 seed at 125 – opened day two with a 3-0 victory over No. 5 seed Brandon Seidman of Bucknell. After a narrow 4-1 setback to No. 3 seed Ryan Miller of Penn, Bayless came back with a victory via medical forfeit in the fifth-place match. Bayless moved to 16-13 on the year with his 4-2 mark on the weekend.
  • Senior Lukus Stricker – the No. 7 seed at 149 – closed the tournament with an 8-2 victory over No. 8 seed Nick Lombard of Binghamton in the seventh-place match. Behind his 3-2 record at the tournament, Stricker – ranked No. 18 in the NCAA RPI – bettered his season record to 19-11.
  • Junior Trevor Tarsi – the No. 9 seed at 157 – closed the tournament with an eighth-place finish. Tarsi dropped a pair of narrow decisions on Sunday, falling to No. 5 seed Markus Hartman of Army, 4-2, and to No. 7 seed Nick Delp of Bucknell, 3-1. Tarsi closed the year with 11 victories.
