Berger Homers, Baseball Falls to Columbia in Series Finale, 7-3

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sophomore Jake Berger hit his second home run of the weekend, but Harvard University baseball fell to Columbia University, 7-3, in the series finale of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
 
The Crimson (13-16, 5-6 Ivy) – which tallied six home runs in the series – scored the game's first run and last two runs, but the host Lions (18-13, 10-2 Ivy) plated seven runs in between those stretches to win their 11th game in a row, including ninth straight Ivy game.
 
In game three, Berger went 2-for-3 with two walks alongside his home run, junior Will Jacobsen went 3-for-4, and junior Pryor Thomas tallied his first two hits of the season. Berger hit his second home run of the series and fourth of the year.
 
For the series, Jacobsen hit .615 (8-for-13) with a home run and three runs scored while Berger hit .462 (6-for-13) with two home runs, three RBIs, and four runs scored.
 
The Crimson opened the game's scoring in the top of the first as Thomas singled to open the frame before sophomore Chris Snopek brought him home with a sacrifice fly. The Lions scored the game's next seven runs with two in the first, one in the fourth, and four in the sixth. The Crimson responded with two runs in the top of the eighth behind a solo home run to right field from Berger and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Peter Messervy

  • Sophomore shortstop Jake Berger went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, a run, and two walks. He hit his second home run of the series and team-high fourth homer of the year. He notched his ninth multi-hit game of the year and reached base safely for the 24th straight game.
  • Junior third baseman Will Jacobsen posted a 3-for-4 effort. He recorded hits in all three games of the series and tallied his 11th multi-hit game of the year.
  • Junior second baseman Pryor Thomas finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, registering his first two hits of the season.
  • Sophomore left fielder Chris Snopek tallied an RBI, run, and walk.
  • Sophomore right-hander Jay Driver threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
  • Junior first baseman Logan Bravo and first-year designated hitter Sean Matson each worked two walks.
  • The Crimson hit six home runs in the series – its most over a three-game span in 2022.
