CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard senior
Hana Moataz capped her distinguished collegiate career by being selected as the winner of the 2022 Betty Richey Award. The announcement was made Tuesday night at the CSA's live college squash awards show, The Senior Serve.
The prestigious recognition is given annually to the woman who best exemplifies the ideals of squash in their love and devotion to the game, their strong sense of fairness and their excellence in play and leadership. Awardees are also praised for their cooperation with opponents, coaches and competition officials and their overall contributions to intercollegiate squash.
Alongside Moataz, this year's trio of Finalists also included Mount Holyoke's Mihiliya Kalahe Arachchige and Virginia's Emma Jinks.
Moataz becomes Harvard's sixth Richey Award honoree all-time joining Mary Hulbert '85, Ingrid Boyum '87, Diana Edge '88, Amanda Sobhy '15 and Gina Kennedy '20.
During her time at Harvard, Moataz twice finished as the runner-up at the CSA Individual National Championship and is a two-time First-Team All-American. A native of Egypt, Moataz compiled a 37-1 individual record with the Crimson, helping the team to three National Championship titles. She served as co-captain during the 2021-22 season, leading the Crimson to a 15-0 record and extending its active win-streak to 98-straight matches.
"The most exciting thing to me as a coach is to see Hana grow and develop into the young woman that she is today,"
Mike Way, the Gregory Lee '87 and Russell Ball '88 Endowed Coach for Squash at Harvard University, said. "She's very self-assured, she's very confident and it shows through in her game."
