CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Closing out nonconference action, the No. 10 Harvard men's lacrosse team (7-1, 2-0 Ivy League) edged Colgate (2-7), 7-6, this afternoon at Jordan Field. The win marks the sixth-straight for the Crimson to improve to 7-1 overall.
Harvard used six different goal scorers to take down the Raiders, led by junior
Hayden Cheek with two.
Nick Loring,
Sam King,
Andrew O'Berry,
Owen Gaffney and
Isaiah Dawson each posted one goal. Gaffney led with a team-best three points, adding two assists to his tally. Gaffney and
Greg Campisi picked up a team-high four groundballs apiece, while King and
Austin Madronic each recorded three.
Steven Cuccurullo registered seven of Harvard's nine face-off wins. In net,
Kyle Mullin made eight saves for a .571 save percentage.
After five minutes of scoreless play to start the game, Colgate broke through to get on the board first.
Sam King evened the score at the eight-minute mark, before
Owen Gaffney gave Harvard the lead at 2-1 in the closing minutes of the quarter.
Hayden Cheek increased the Crimson's lead through the first half of the second quarter with two-straight goals to make it a 4-0 run for Harvard.
Isaiah Dawson widened the Crimson's margin to five with his second point of the day. Dominant defense from Harvard held the Raiders to just one goal in the first half, and none in the second quarter, to take a 5-1 advantage into halftime.
Nick Loring kicked off scoring in the third quarter, making it five different goal scorers for the Crimson. Colgate cut its deficit to four at 6-2 midway through the frame. Strong defense from Harvard kept the Raiders off the board for the remainder of the period as the Crimson headed into the final frame with a 6-2 lead.
Andrew O'Berry picked up a transition goal to build a 7-2 advantage for Harvard, before Colgate went on a run to find the back of the net for four-straight goals to come within one. Despite a 4-0 run from the Raiders, Harvard held on to clinch a 7-6 win.
