ITHACA, N.Y. – In its first Ivy League road test of the season, the No. 11 Harvard men's lacrosse team (7-2, 2-1 Ivy League) fell, 17-9, to No. 6 Cornell (9-1, 3-1 Ivy League) this afternoon. The Big Red snapped the Crimson's six-game winning streak and undefeated conference record.
Three Crimson players recorded two goals apiece, including
Miles Botkiss,
Austin Madronic and
Andrew Perry.
Hayden Cheek,
Joe Dowling and
Charlie Olmert each added one.
Kyle Mullin registered a team-high five groundballs, while
Greg Campisi,
Kyle Massimilian, and
Tommy Martinson all notched three. Martinson also added a team-best two caused turnovers to his tally. Mullin made 14 saves in set for a .452 save percentage.
Despite strong defense from Mullin and three saves through the first half of the opening quarter, Cornell broke through at the six-minute mark to get on the board. Madronic evened the score late in the quarter after forcing a failed clear from the Big Red, as the two teams finished the first frame tied up at one.
Mullin picked up where he left off, registering nine saves on the day through the midway point of quarter two. Cornell regained its lead at 2-1 to strike first in the second quarter at 9:01. The Big Red dominated for the remainder of the frame, adding five-straight to make it a 6-0 run and take a 7-1 advantage into halftime.
The Big Red found the back of the net three times in the opening three minutes of the third quarter. Harvard responded with back-to-back goals from Dowling and Olmert. The Crimson then made it a 4-0 run and cut its deficit to five at 10-5. Cheek converted on a man-up opportunity, before Madronic notched his second of the game.
Perry brought the Crimson within six to start the fourth quarter. Cornell used another offensive surge to build a 16-6 lead after four-straight goals. Perry halted the Big Red's run with his second of the frame and Botkiss scored two-straight in the final minutes of the quarter. However, Cornell's advantage proved too much to overcome, as the Big Red sealed a 17-9 win.
