Women’s Rugby Plays Host to Ivy 7s Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -  Harvard women's rugby will play host to the Ivy 7s Championships on Saturday, April 23 at Mignone Field. The varsity pool will feature Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown & Princeton while Yale, Columbia and Cornell will also field teams. Games will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. and run throughout the day, with main field matches being streamed live on ESPN+.

What to Know
  • Harvard welcomes Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, Yale & Princeton to compete for the Ivy 7s Championship.
  • The Crimson took home the Ivy 7s crown in 2019, defeating Dartmouth by a score of 22-17 in overtime to secure the title at Mignone Field. Harvard had previously won the tournament in 2016 and 2017.
  • Harvard went 5-0 at Crimson 7s to begin the spring season, securing the tournament victory with a 25-17 triumph over Army in the cup final.
  • The Crimson took down West Chester, American International, Sacred Heart, and Army on two occasions in route to the Crimson 7s title.
  • Senior Sofie Fella led the Crimson with six tries at Crimson 7s, while first-year Jara Emtage-Cave added four to her ledger.
  • Sophomore Brogan Mior and junior Alex Pipkin each scored three tries on the day at Crimson 7s, with Pipkin also knocking in seven conversions.
  • The games will be split across two fields, with the men's Ivy 7s Championship taking place simultaneously.
 
At the Helm
Mel Denham is in the midst of her fourth season (fifth year) at the helm of Harvard women's rugby. Last spring season (2019), she led the Crimson to its third-ever Ivy 7s championship at Mignone Field. Denham received the Ragatz Family Harvard Women's Coach of Excellence Award following her successful 2019-20 campaign which saw the program win its first-ever 15s national championship. She owns a 33-14 overall record in 7s play with the Crimson.

The Crimson has qualified for the Rugby 7s Collegiate Championships in Atlanta, Ga., from May 14-15, hosted by Kennesaw State University.
