Women's Lacrosse Falls 13-12 in Heartbreaker at Yale

NEW HAVEN, CT – In a thrilling back and forth contest, Harvard women's lacrosse came up just short at rival Yale, falling 13-12 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Sophomore Callie Hem recorded a season high six goals, and Riley Campbell added four goals to lead the Harvard attack. Maddie Barkate had two goals and an assist.
 
Harvard trailed 13-11 with minutes to play, and Campbell cut the Yale lead to one with 1:28 to go. But the Crimson would got not closer.
 
Barkate got things started for Harvard, cutting inside the circle and scoring on a turnaround shot at 9:21.
 
Minutes later, Hem took a pass from Barkate, cut through the middle of several Yale defenders and scored at 6:22 to put Harvard up 2-0.
 
Yale responded with four goals in a span of 2:20 late in the quarter to take its first lead of the day.
 
Hem stopped the run early in the second quarter with her second goal of the day, cutting straight to the front of the cage for a high low shot at 12:45 to make it 4-3.
 
Riley Campbell tied it less than a minute later at 12:00 with a free position goal.
 
But another three goal run by the Bulldogs put the home team up again.
 
Hem scored two more goals at 5:07 and 3:25 late in the half as part of a back and forth between the two teams late in the frame. Campbell also added another with 1:51 to go, as Yale led 9-7 at the break.
 
A more defensive third quarter saw the lead remain at two for Yale, as Harvard tied it midway through the fourth quarter on a great individual effort by Riley Campbell at 7:00, followed by a free position goal for Barkate at 5:59.
 
The Bulldogs responded with goals at 3:08 and 1:31 to build their lead back to two (11-9) heading into the fourth quarter.
