PRINCETON, N.J. – Harvard dropped the third-and-deciding game to Princeton, 6-1, on Sunday in the Ivy League Playoff Series at Strubing Field. The contest, which took two days to complete due to inclement weather, was the Crimson's last of 2022 as it finished the campaign with a 22-20 record.
The game restarted in the top of the second inning with the Tigers leading, 3-0. On Saturday, Princeton put aboard its first two batters and surrounded a pop-up with a two-run double and an RBI groundout to take the early lead.
When play resumed on Sunday, Harvard threatened early, putting runners on second and third with one out, but came away empty. The missed opportunity brought the Tigers to the plate, and they added to their cushion with an RBI double.
The Crimson, again, put two runners aboard in the fourth inning, but could not come up with a two-out knock to narrow its deficit. Harvard, however, broke its scoring drought in the fifth when
Morgan Melito drove in
Mackenzie Tyler, who drew a leadoff walk. The run would end up being the lone the Crimson tally despite having two on with two out.
Princeton responded in the home half of the fifth with a pair of runs to take a 6-1 lead. Even with the two runs scoring, the Crimson limited a potentially big inning for the Tigers as
Anna Reed got out of a bases-loaded situation by getting a groundout to third.
Harvard did not go down without a fight as
Kaitlin Lampson reached on an error and
Lauren Bobowski drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning. The season came to a close when
Allison Heffley grounded out to second for the final out.
The Crimson, which returned to competition this year for the first time since 2020, recorded its 14
th consecutive completed season with a .500-or-better record, the longest streak in school history.
