Harvard Athletics to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Title IX

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Athletics is proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX and the accomplishments of its women student-athletes and teams over the course of the 2022-23 academic year. Title IX became a United States federal civil rights law on June 23, 1972.

"Harvard Athletics is strongly aligned with the mission of Harvard College and has been an integral part of Harvard's educational experience for countless students," Erin McDermott, The John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics, said. "Title IX's passage guaranteed access to all educational opportunities including athletics to female students, resulting in enormous increases in the opportunities for girls and women in sports. Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Title IX. We will honor this milestone over the next academic year with many initiatives, including inviting alumnae student-athletes back to campus for a celebration, hosting interactive youth clinics for girls, and incorporating a social media campaign of significant moments and achievements for women's sports and female student-athletes at Harvard. These are just a few ways in which we intend to commemorate this significant anniversary."

To accompany the Crimson's scheduled content over the next year, Harvard Athletics has unveiled a brand mark to commemorate Title IX's passing as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, as well as a dedicated webpage that honors women's athletics at Harvard.

As part of its celebration, Harvard Athletics will debut a video series, beginning this Fall, with episodes airing throughout '22-'23, while also playing host to conversations and events. Fans should be on the lookout for additional content throughout the year, as Harvard Athletics commemorates the achievements of its women student-athletes, while looking ahead as the Crimson moves into the next 50 years of Title IX.
