Women’s Soccer Tops Northeastern in Home Opener, 3-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's soccer team (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) came out on top in its crosstown rivalry matchup with the Northeastern Huskies (1-2-1, 0-0 CAA) this afternoon. Angela Caloia, Ainsley Ahmadian and Hannah Bebar had the goals to secure the victory for the Crimson in its home opener today.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crimson came out strong off the opening kickoff, winning possession and going on to fire off three shots, one being on goal, in the first five minutes of play. The Huskies were able to fight back, scoring the first goal of the contest seven minutes into the match.

Harvard would not let up, as the squad continued to pressure the Huskies backline in the opening frame. After a trio of Harvard shots, Hannah Griffin made an impressive run down the sideline and into the attacking zone, where she dropped a pass to Bebar, who put a cross into the Northeastern 18, connecting with Caloia who put a shot into the twine to net her 17th career goal 17' into the first half.

Later on in the first half, Bebar got on the scoresheet herself, threading a shot past the keeper and into the far right corner of the net. Caloia set up the goal after intercepting a pass and feeding Bebar for the goal. The assist was the first of the season for the striker.

Northeastern went on to even the score 41' into the first half to make the total 2-2 going into the break.

Harvard opened up the second period of play with the same pressure it displayed in the first, running down the field to score a goal just over one minute into the half. This time, it was Ahmadian who scored off a set piece, putting a header into the back of the net off a corner kick from Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir. The score gave the Crimson a 3-2 advantage it would hold for the remainder of regulation.

Starting goalkeeper, Anna Karpenko, made three saves in the contest, none bigger than the stop she made 63' into the game to preserve the lead for Harvard. The 3-2 result gave the Crimson its second win of the season and second straight win over Northeastern.
