GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Harvard women's soccer team (3-0, 0-0 Ivy) continued its impressive run this afternoon, as it took down the North Carolina-Greensboro Spartans (2-2-1, 0-0 SoCon) by a score of 4-0.
Ainsley Ahmadian,
Audrey Francois,
Nicola Golen and
Megan Mackey all scored for the Crimson. Senior goalkeeper,
Hannah Gardner, backstopped the winning effort with a four-save shutout between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard arrived in Greensboro to face off against the Spartans in what would be the programs first regular season game in North Carolina since 1997. The Crimson opened up the game pushing the ball up the field, continually putting pressure on the Spartan backline.
Hannah Griffin had the first great look of the game, but it was turned aside by the UNCG keeper.
Hannah Bebar set up the first Crimson goal by intercepting a pass, turning and playing a great ball through the opposition and onto the foot of Ahmadian who did the rest, scoring her second goal of the season and putting Harvard up a goal just 13' into regulation.
15 minutes later, Audrey Farncois found herself in a great situation in the 18, but was fouled and awarded a penalty kick. Francois fooled the keeper, and planted a shot in the back of the net to score her first career goal and put Harvard up two goals.
The Crimson kept its foot on the gas pedal after the 30' goal, and it was once again Francois and company who crept up into the scoring area later in the half. After a throw in deep in the offensive third, Francois made a run towards the net, passing to Golen who beat the keeper and scored her first career goal. The tally put Harvard up 3-0 going into the halftime break.
Mackey put her name on the scoresheet just three minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Caloia and slotting it in the bottom left quarter of the net to increase the Harvard lead once again.
UNCG attempted to answer for the remainder of the contest, but were cut off by Garnder and the Crimson defensive unit comprised of
Smith Hunter,
Taylor Fasnacht,
Sydney Farnham,
Jordan Di Verniero, Hildur Hakonardottir and
Lara Schenk.
