Women's Soccer Powers Past #17 NC State in 2-0 Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Harvard women's soccer team (4-0, 0-0 Ivy) remained undefeated this afternoon by handing the North Carolina State Wolfpack (4-1-1, 0-0 ACC) it's first loss of the season. Ainsley Ahmadian's two goals powered the Crimson to the 2-0 result that was backstopped by a two-save shutout from Anna Karpenko and a relentless effort from the Crimson's defensive backline.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Crimson and Wolfpack both paced themselves in the opening fifteen minutes of the contest, trading long possessions while looking for scoring opportunities. NC State fired off the first shot of the contest, a low roller that was stopped by Crimson netminder, Anna Karpenko.

Harvard countered off the save, putting pressure on the Wolpack defense. Hannah Bebar and Ainsley Ahmadian both had great looks off the attack, but both were fought off by the NC State keeper.

Later in the half, Bebar found Ahmadian who split the Wolpack defense and snuck home her second goal of the season. The strike put the Crimson up a goal 31' into the action. The score would stay that way after 45'.

The Crimson were on the run early on in the second half, looking for its second goal. After three shots from Bebar, Angela Caloia and Hannh Griffin, Ahmadian struck again. The sophomore forward fired a rocket into the back right corner of the net to beat the keeper and put Harvard up a pair of goals at 50'.

The defensive backline of Lara Schenk, Taylor Fasnacht, Smith Hunter and Jordan Di Verniero held strong in the contest. All four played 80-plus minutes and held NC State to only six shots throughout the afternoon. Just two of those shots reached Karpenko, who cleaned up them both to backstop the winning effort.

The Crimson would hold on to shutout the Wolfpack, handing them their first loss of the season with the result. Harvard is now 4-0 on the season, the first time the program has reached that feat since 1996.
