PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Harvard women's soccer (6-0-2) remained unbeaten this Saturday, as it fought to a 1-1 draw against the University of Pennsylvania (2-1-6) at Rhodes Field in the team's Ivy League opener.
Sophie Hirst had the lone strike for the Crimson, who outshot the Quakers 26-8 in the contest.
Hannah Gardner made three saves in net to lead the defensive effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard was on the attack early and often in the contest against the Quakers. Ainsley Ahmadian recorded the first shot attempt of the game for the Crimson just two minutes into the action.
- Hannah Gardner deflected the first shot she faced at the seven minute mark to keep the game scoreless.
- Ahmadian recorded the only shot on goal for the Crimson in the first half at 15'.
- The Crimson would fire off nine more shots in the first 45 minutes.
- Gardner made another save as time expired in the first half to keep the game scoreless at the break.
- Harvard came out on the attack in the second half, as Angela Caloia and Josefine Hasbo put back-to-back shots on net in the 52nd minute.
- Sophie Hirst finally put Harvard on the scoreboard when she buried a shot from outside the 18. The strike was her first goal of the season.
- Penn tied the score less than a minute later to knot the game at one goal per side.
- Harvard fired off 11 more shots in the half, but couldn't find the winner.
- Jordan Di Verniero had the best opportunity in the 70th minute, but her chance was swallowed up by the Penn keeper.
- The game ended in a tie after both teams failed to find a winner at the 90-minute mark.

UP NEXT
After back-to-back road games, the Crimson will have a quick three-game homestand at Jordan Field beginning next weekend. Harvard first welcomes Yale on October 1 before completing its nonconference schedule with a battle against Boston University on Oct. 4. Then the team will turn around to play Cornell on Oct. 8. All games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
