No. 7 Field Hockey Falls to No. 15 UConn, 2-0, Despite Late Surge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a late surge of chances, including six penalty corners in the final quarter,, No. 7 Harvard field hockey (1-1) was edged by No. 15 UConn (2-1), 2-0 at Berylson Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UConn set the tone early in the first quarter, controlling the game and possession in Harvard's end.

Harvard goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo (three saves) came up with a diving stick save on UConn's first good chance of the afternoon off a penalty corner at 13:32.

But the Huskies converted on another chance midway through the frame, as Frances Carstens took a pass off a corner and fired a reverse stick shot into the net at the 7:18 mark.

Harvard nearly tied the game late in the second quarter, when a shot from distance was redirected off the post with just over two minutes to play in the half. Sophomore Lucy Leel had a shot kicked away by UConn goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher (four saves) moments later with :46 remaining in the quarter.

UCon's Morgan Kaufmann scored in the early stages of the fourth quarter to give the visiting Huskies a two-goal lead with 11:25 to play in the game.

The Crimson racked up six penalty corners the rest of the way, but Sprecher and the UConn defense were able to keep Harvard off the board.
