Garcia-Morillo Beats Buzzer to Lift Men’s Soccer over Bryant, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Nico Garcia-Morillo scored the game-winning goal with 2.5 seconds remaining to lift Harvard University men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Bryant University on Tuesday night at Jordan Field.
 
After junior Willem Ebbinge scored the game's opening goal in the 50th minute, Bryant equalized in the 80th minute off a free kick before Garcia-Morillo provided the decisive goal in the waning moments to propel the host Crimson (2-0-0) past the visiting Bulldogs (2-2-0). 

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior Nico Garcia-Morillo scored his first goal of the season, his third career goal, and first career game-winning goal with his strike in the 90th minute.
  • Junior Willem Ebbinge posted a goal and an assist in the game. He notched a goal for the second straight contest and leads the Crimson with five points on the year. For his career, Ebbinge now has six goals, 13 assists, and 25 points.
  • Junior Nik White tallied his first career assist on Ebbinge's goal at the 49:08 mark.
  • First-year Marcos Ojea Quintana registered his first collegiate point with an assist on Garcia-Morillo's goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson made three saves in the opening 84 minutes before senior keeper David Paquette came on for the final six minutes to earn the victory.
  • As a team, Harvard held advantages in shots (27-7), shots on goal (15-4), and corner kicks (9-2).
  • Among the Crimson's field players, White and sophomores Kristján Gunnarsson and Jan Riecke all played the full 90 minutes. White and Riecke have played all 180 minutes on the season.
  • Harvard improved to 1-0-1 all-time vs. Bryant. 

How It Happened

  • Harvard generated several chances in the first half, gaining edges in shots (16-1), shots on goal (7-0), and corner kicks (4-1). The Crimson put five shots on target in the final 12 minutes of the half.
  • The breakthrough came in the 50th minute as junior Willem Ebbinge received a pass from junior Nik White, evaded defenders to create space, and slotted a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
  • Bryant drew level at the 79:39 mark as Luis Fernando sent a free kick from just outside the penalty area into the back of the net.
  • The Crimson pressured the Bulldogs over the final 10 minutes, including a penalty kick shot on goal and ensuing rebound shot on goal from sophomore Alessandro Arlotti in the 85th minute.
  • Senior Nico Garcia-Morillo broke the deadlock with under three seconds remaining. After Ebbinge played a ball into the box, first-year Marcos Ojea Quintana kept the play alive before Garcia-Morillo fired a volley into the net.
