Men’s Basketball Falls at Penn to Close Ivy First Half, 83-68

PHILADELPHIA – Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum scored a team-high 21 points, but Harvard University men's basketball fell at the University of Pennsylvania, 83-68, on Saturday afternoon at The Palestra.
 
Closing the month of January and the first half of Ivy League play, the Crimson (12-9, 3-4 Ivy) trailed the Quakers (11-11, 3-4 Ivy) at halftime, 50-35, and could pull no closer than 11 points in the second half as the two teams moved into a tie in the conference standings.
 
Ledlum eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the 10th time this season while sophomore guard Evan Nelson (15 points, 4-of-6 3-pointers) and senior guard Idan Tretout (12 points, four assists) joined Ledlum as double-figure scorers.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum scored a team-high 21 points to go with six rebounds. He led the team in scoring for the 17th time this year, scored in double figures for the 19th time in 21 games, and eclipsed 20 points for the 10th time.
  • Sophomore guard Evan Nelson tallied 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point distance. He scored in double figures for the fifth time this year and tied his season high with four made 3-pointers.
  • Senior guard Idan Tretout posted 12 points, four rebounds, and a team-best four assists. He scored in double figures for the fifth straight game and for the sixth time in his last eight outings.
  • Junior forward Justice Ajogbor registered eight points, four rebounds, and a team-best two blocks.
  • First-year forward Chisom Okpara contributed seven points, six rebounds, and a team-high three steals.
  • Junior guard Sam Silverstein grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and added three assists. He led the team in rebounding for the fourth time this season and corralled double-figure boards for the second time this year.
 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson pulled within 13-10 of the Quakers with 13:11 to go in the first half following a 3-pointer from Nelson and layup from Ledlum.
  • After Penn went ahead 22-10 with 10:57 left in the opening half on a 9-0 run, the Crimson remained within 28-20 with 8:26 on the clock as Ledlum scored Harvard's next eight points with a pair of free throws and pair of 3-pointers.
  • Harvard remained within eight at 37-29 with 4:14 to go until halftime following a 3-pointer from Nelson prior to Penn using an 8-0 spurt to move ahead 45-29 with 2:10 to go until the break. The Quakers led 50-35 at the intermission.
  • A 6-0 run from Harvard, including four points from Ajogbor cut the margin to 52-41 with 17:11 remaining. The Quakers pushed their advantage back to 62-46 with 10:49 to play despite a 33-pointer from Nelson a layup from Ledlum.
  • Penn gained a 66-48 edge with 8:08 to go prior to a 3-pointer from senior guard Luka Sakota. After the Quakers moved ahead 73-53 with 5:52 left, the Crimson used a 10-2 run to pull within 75-63 with 3:26 to play as Nelson and Tretout each hit 3-pointers and Ledlum finished an old-fashioned 3-point play.
  • Nelson hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining to keep the margin at 79-68 before the hosts closed out the contest.
