No. 23 Football Downs Dartmouth; Murphy Sets Ivy Conference-Wins Record

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 23 Harvard Football defeated Dartmouth, 17-9, on Saturday in its Homecoming game at its annual Fall Fest. The Crimson improved to 6-1 (3-1 Ivy League) with the decision and pushed Tim Murphy, The Thomas Stephenson Family Head Coach for Harvard Football, past Yale's Carm Cozza for most conference wins in Ivy League history. Murphy now owns 136 Ivy victories. The Big Green, meanwhile, fell to 3-4 (2-2 Ivy) on the season.

How It Happened

  • Turnovers highlighted two of the first three drives, but it was Harvard that capitalized first. Following a Dartmouth punt on its first drive, the Big Green intercepted Charles DePrima at the goal line. On its ensuing possession, Dartmouth QB Dylan Cadwallader had the ball knocked loose by Kaleb Moody on 2nd-and-7, only to have Tyler Huenemann pounce on the ball. Three plays later, Crimson QB Jaden Craig rushed into the endzone from four yards out to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.
  • Dartmouth punctured the scoreboard with 10 seconds left in the first quarter when Owen Zalc connected on a field-goal attempt from 37 yards out, capping a 7-play, 19-yard drive. The 10-7 Harvard advantage held for the balance of the half after neither team crossed the goal line in the second quarter.
  • The Big Green ended the game's lengthy scoreless streak with a 47-yard field goal from Zalc, helping Dartmouth close its deficit to 7-6 with 5:49 left in the frame.
  • Harvard wasted little time in answering, going 75 yards in 11 plays, with the drive culminating in a Craig 3-yard rushing TD. During the possession, Harvard attacked the Big Green on the ground, picking up 62 yards with Craig going 2-for-2 in the passing game. As a result of the TD, Harvard entered the final period ahead, 14-6.
  • In the fourth quarter with just under 10 minutes to go, Dartmouth crossed into Harvard territory. On a 2nd-and-5 play, Phillip Smitherman picked off Cadwallader, putting an end to the Big Green drive, setting up another long Crimson drive. This time, the Harvard offense covered 60 yards in 13 plays with Cali Canaval connecting on a field goal from 22 yards out.
  • Dartmouth had one final push, but needed more time on its side. After Harvard took a 17-6 lead, the Big Green took over with 3:26 to go. The visitors methodically marched down the field, but the Harvard defense did not break, only allowing a Zalc field goal from 35 yards out. Dartmouth later tried an onside kick, but the Crimson cleanly scooped up the ball and iced the game with 14 seconds remaining.
