CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 9 field hockey fell to No. 1 UNC on Sunday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium. The Crimson battled the host Tar Heels and managed to keep fighting back throughout the game but couldn't overcome two goals in the second half from UNC. Harvard finishes its season with an Ivy Title, Ivy Tournament Championship, and a trip to the Elite Eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lara Beekhuis had the first attempt for Harvard early in the first quarter. The first-year put it just as wide of the right post.
UNC then marched down the field and earned a pair of corners. After the defense held strong as the Tar Heels tried to execute a set play, UNC was awarded another corner. UNC eventually scored on the second chance after a deflection on the post beat Shahbo.
Harvard was awarded its second corner of the game shortly after the UNC goal.
Bronte-May Brough fired a rocket that got a piece of
Kitty Chapple to tie the game at one.
Harvard picked up the pace and started to control momentum after the Chapple goal. Shortly after,
Marie Schaefers just missed a rebound to take the lead.
UNC scored off another corner to start the second quarter. UNC was able to generate a lot of chances off deflections throughout the tilt.
Harvard was awarded a pair of corners halfway through the frame. On the first attempt,
Kate Oliver and the Crimson offense were able to get a couple of rebound cracks but somehow the ball stayed out. On the follow-up chance,
Lara Beekhuis sent a rocket just wide.
UNC scored again to open the third quarter off a corner attempt to make it 3-1 with plenty of time left in the second half.
In the fourth quarter,
Lucy Leel worked her way through the Tar Heel defense and fired a shot that got through the UNC keeper and was put home by
Lara Beekhuis. Beekhuis converted to make it a 3-2 game for her tenth goal of the year.
Avery Donahue was able to make a defensive save after a ball got behind Shahbo after the lead was cut to just one but UNC was able to regain possession and strike for their fourth goal of the game. The defensive save was the first for the Crimson this season.
