CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 9 Harvard field hockey defeated Princeton to claim the inaugural Ivy League Field Hockey Tournament championship. Lara Beekuis scored with thirty seconds left to give Harvard a 2-1 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Crimson earned an automatic bid into the 2023 NCAA tournament with a win today.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson controlled much of the possession in the first quarter but neither team was able to generate multiple scoring chances. Harvard had three shots in the first quarter while they were also able to hold the Tigers to no shots in the opening 15 minutes.
Three shots were enough for Harvard after
Lara Beekhuis scored on one of three shot attempts. Beekhuis converted off a corner attempt to give Harvard the lead halfway through the first quarter. Beekhuis, who scored the game-winner in the semi-finals scored her fourth goal in three games with the first quarter strike. The first-year has scored four consecutive goals for Harvard dating back to her two-goal performance against Cornell.
Tessa Shahbo came up with a huge stop for Harvard just after the goal from Beekhuis. After Princeton was awarded a penalty stroke, Shahbo made what was possibly her best stop of the season with a diving effort to protect the one-goal lead.
Harvard took a 1-0 lead into the first half but it didn't hold long when Princeton was able to convert on a corner attempt to tie the game early in the third quarter.
With the stakes raised in a tie game,
Tessa Shahbo made yet another massive save with two minutes left in regulation to keep the score where it was. Shahbo located a corner attempt and flashed the left pad to kick the ball to safety.
With just under forty seconds to play,
Lara Beekhuis was the hero after firing a shot that barely got over the goal line. After having been confirmed through video replay, Beekhuis scored her fifth consecutive goal for the Crimson. The first-year won MOP for her three goals in the tournament.
Kitty Chapple,
Tessa Shahbo, and captain
Emily Guckian were also named to the all-tournament team.
