Ledlum Drops Career-High 35 Points, Leads Men’s Basketball Past Cornell, 73-56

ITHACA, N.Y.  – Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum scored a career-high 35 points, made 12-of-17 field goals and 9-of-12 free throws, and tallied 13 rebounds and a career-best six steals to lead Harvard University men's basketball past Cornell University, 73-56, on Saturday evening at Newman Arena.
 
Holding the hosts to a season-low point total, the Crimson (14-12, 5-7 Ivy) led 40-34 at halftime and used a 19-4 run in the second half to turn a 42-40 lead into a 61-44 advantage with 12:32 to go on its way to its second victory over the Big Red (16-9, 6-6 Ivy) on the season.
 
The Crimson completed the weekend sweep in its final Ivy League back-to-back of the regular season after topping Columbia, 83-65, on Friday night. Harvard held Cornell to a season-low 56 points as the Big Red entered the game averaging 84.4 points per game.
 
Ledlum scored over 30 points for the second time in his career, posted his seventh double-double of the season, and finished in double figures for the 24th time in 26 games this year. Senior guard Idan Tretout joined Ledlum in double figures, scoring 19 points and registering a double-digit scoring effort for the ninth time in his last 10 games.
   

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum scored a career-high 35 points on 12-of-17 field goals, 2-of-3 3-pointers, and 9-of-12 free throws. He grabbed 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season and made a career-high six steals. He added three assists and two blocks.
  • Ledlum scored over 30 points for the second time in his career, eclipsing his previous career best of 30 points vs. Loyola Chicago earlier this year. He matched his career high with 12 field goals made and tied his season high with nine made free throws.
  • Ledlum netted over 20 points for the 11th time this season and scored in double figures for the 24th time in 26 games this year. He led the Crimson in scoring for the 19th time this year and in rebounding for the 17th time.
  • Senior guard Idan Tretout scored 19 points on 6-of-10 field goals, 2-of-6 3-pointers, and 5-of-6 free throws, while registering three rebounds and three assists. He scored in double figures for the 12th time this season and for the ninth time in his last 10 games.
  • First-year forward Chisom Okpara posted five points and four boards while junior guard Sam Silverstein and first-year guard Chandler Piggé each chipped in five points, three boards, and two assists.
  • Sophomore guard Evan Nelson distributed a game-high four assists.
  • Harvard held Cornell to a season-low 56 points as the Big Red entered the game averaging 84.4 points per game. Cornell's previous season low was 63 points against Syracuse. The Crimson stood as the fourth team this season to hold the Big Red under 70 points.
  • Harvard limited Cornell to 32.7-percent shooting from the field for the game, including 21.7-percent shooting in the second half.
  • The Crimson claimed a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint. Harvard made 20-of-32 shots (62.5 percent) from inside the 3-point arc. 

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the game with a 6-0 lead behind a pair of early layups from Ledlum before Cornell moved ahead 9-6. The Crimson then scored eight consecutive points to re-gain a 14-9 edge at the 14:06 mark of the first half. Ledlum started the streak with a 3-pointer.
  • Remaining ahead 16-13 following a Ledlum dunk, Harvard rattled off another eight straight points to pull ahead 24-13 with 9:17 to go until halftime. Ledlum added another four points during the run.
  • Harvard later used a 9-2 spurt to push its lead to 33-18 with 4:35 left until the break. Tretout netted five points during the run. The Crimson remained up 36-21 and held a 40-34 lead at halftime despite a 13-4 run from Cornell to close the half.
  • After Cornell trimmed the margin to 42-40 with 17:44 to play, the Crimson made its decisive move, using a 19-4 run to capture a 61-44 advantage with 12:32 to go. Tretout and Ledlum started the run with back-to-back 3-pointers. Tretout scored the last five points of the stretch, netting 10 points overall during the run.
  • Maintaining a 66-53 lead with 6:07 left, the Crimson netted six straight points behind four free throws from Ledlum and a jumper from Tretout to gain a 72-53 edge with 4:19 remaining.
