ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In a back-and-forth battle, Harvard women's lacrosse (0-1) fell to No. 17 Michigan (2-2) in the team's season opener at U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor.
Callie Hem,
Riley Campbell, and
Maddie Barkate each had two goals and an assist to lead the Crimson attack.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Harvard and Michigan met for the first time ever in women's lacrosse, with the Crimson one of two Ivy programs to open its season against ranked competition.
- The Crimson got off to a great start, scoring three goals in the opening nine minutes of the first quarter.
- First-year midfielder Charlotte Hodgson scored her first career goal just over two minutes into the game, taking a pass from Barkate and finding the back of the cage from in close. Campbell added another for Harvard on a free position shot between the legs of Michigan goalie Maya Santa-Maria at 11:02. Then Barkate scored her first of the season on a great move cutting to the side of the cage, finding the net from a sharp angle at 6:08.
- Harvard responded to an extended run by the Wolverines with three straight goals late in the second quarter to keep within striking distance.
- Hem scored on a low-to high free position shot with 3:39 to play in the half to make it a 9-4 game. Just over a minute later Campbell cut inside the 8-meter arc and scored from straight away at 2:15 for her second goal of the day. First-year Kate Gilliam scored her first career goal from the left, beating Santa-Maria on the short side to cut the Michigan lead to three with 1:19 to go in the half.
- Harvard remained within striking distance at 10-6 at the break, with junior goalie Chloe Provenzano making three saves to help the Crimson comeback effort.
- In a defensive third quarter, Harvard stopped a two-goal run late in the frame, as sophomore Charley Meier took a high low pass from Hem, absorbed contact, and scored on a quick shot with 1:19 to play in the third quarter, making it a 12-7 game.
- Barkate scored her second goal of the game on a long shot from just right of center with 11:10 to play in the fourth quarter to make it 14-8.
- Harvard added two goals in the final :30 of the contest, as senior captain Meredith Langmuir notched her first goal of the season at the :23 mark, and Hem scored on a free position shot with three seconds to play.
