Women’s Lacrosse Drops 10-9 Decision to Georgetown

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's lacrosse (0-2, 0-0 Ivy) battled until the very end but fell in its home opener to Georgetown this afternoon at Jordan Field. The Crimson got two goals from the trio of Riley Campbell, Callie Hem and Hannah Shiels, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Hoyas (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crimson and the Hoyas met on Jordan Field this afternoon in frigid temperatures that were close to 20 degrees at game time.
  • Riley Campbell scored the first goal of the game - a free position goal - for the Crimson three minutes into the action.
  • Callie Hem answered with a goal just 38 seconds after the Hoyas tied the game in the first quarter.
  • Hannah Shield caused back-to-back turnovers in the midfield before Georgetown regained possession and tied the game. The sides traded possession for nearly six minutes before the Hoyas took a 3-2 lead with 3:46 left in the quarter.
  • Hannah Shiels evened the score with her first goal of the season before the Hoyas found the net to retake the lead. Georgetown held the 4-3 lead after time expired in the first period.
  • Harvard and Georgetown traded shots for the first seven minutes of the second quarter, but Chloe Provenzano made a pair of saves and the Georgetown goalie made three saves to keep the game a 4-3 seven minutes into the second period.
  • Hannah Shiels scored her second goal of the game, answering a previous Georgetown goal, to make the total 5-4.
  • Georgetown went on a two-goal run before Riley Campbell and Callie Hem answered for the Crimson late in the quarter. Hem's goal with just 20 seconds left in the quarter made the score 7-6 going into halftime.
  • After Provenzano and the Georgetown goalie traded saves to open the second half, the Hoyas took an 8-6 lead five minutes into the quarter. Charlotte Hogsden answered with a goal to cut the Hoya lead to one midway through the third period.
  • The rest of the quarter was a battle, with the goalkeepers stealing the show. Provenzano made a trio of saves to hold off Georgetown for the final 12 minutes of the quarter. Harvard scored on another buzzer-beater goal, this time from Ilana Kofman, that evened the total at 8-8 going into the fourth quarter.
  • Georgetown found the net early on in the fourth, but the team's would once again trade possessions for nearly eight minutes before Caroline Mullahy scored off a free-position shot (her first of the season) to even the score.
  • The Hoyas scored late in the quarter, taking a 10-9 lead. The Crimson hit the pipe on the ensuing possession before the final buzzer rang, giving Georgetown the victory.
