Lybrook, Lane Hit First Career Home Runs, Baseball Falls to Pitt in Series Finale, 17-7

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.  – Junior William Lybrook and first-year Max Lane each hit his first collegiate home run, but Harvard University baseball fell to the University of Pittsburgh, 17-7, on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Park.
 
Closing out its season-opening weekend at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, the Crimson (1-3) held a 3-2 lead through three innings before the Panthers (4-3) scored six runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth frame to gain separation.
 
Lybrook hit a two-run home run, and Lane hit a solo shot in the sixth inning for the Crimson. Junior Chris Snopek went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI, a run scored, and two walks on the day. Out of the bullpen, senior Pryor Thomas threw 3.0 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, with two walks and five strikeouts.

How It Happened

  • The Crimson got on the board early, starting the scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Snopek's RBI double was the key hit in Harvard's three-run inning while Bravo also brought home a run with a single.
  • The Panthers then plated 15 runs over the third through fifth innings to take a 15-3 lead before the Crimson got back on the board in the sixth.
  • Harvard hit two home runs in the sixth inning on the way to pushing four runs across, which rimmed the margin to 15-7. Lybrook started the inning's scoring with a two-run homer to left field before Lane followed with a homer to left. Giberti closed the frame's scoring with an RBI single to center field.
  • Pitt added two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Harvard returns to the state of Florida to take on Florida International University for a four-game series in Miami from Mar. 3-5. The series opens on Mar. 3 at 6:30 p.m. before a doubleheader on Mar. 4 starting at 2:00 p.m. and the series finale on Mar. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
