Men’s Tennis Topples Northwestern for Fourth Ranked Win

EVANSTON, IL – No. 18 Harvard Men's Tennis (4-1) climbed back into the win column tonight with a 5-2 win over T-No. 23 Northwestern (4-3).  The win is the fourth ranked win for the Crimson in just five matches so far this season.
 
Harvard began the night by securing the doubles point off wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions.  Ronan Jachuck and Steven Sun improved to 4-1 on the season by securing the first win on the night.  Followed by a tight 7-5 win from Valdemar Pape and Daniel Milavksy to grab the doubles point and put the Crimson up 1-0.
 
Moving into singles, the Wildcats tied the match up at the No. 5 position but Harvard quickly went back up with a 6-3, 6-2 win from No. 46 Harris Walker at the No. 1 position.  Ronan Jachuck then grabbed his first win of the year dropping Simen Bratholm (Northwestern) in straight sets.  

The Crimson ultimately clinched the victory over the Wildcats with Valdemar Pape's first singles win of the spring season.  The first-year downed Gleb Blekher (Northwestern), 7-6, 6-3, to put the Crimson up 4-1 with two matches outstanding.  

To close out singles, Daniel Milavsky, in his first appearance of the year at the No. 2 position, defeated No. 97 Ivan Yatsuk, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to grab the fifth win for the Crimson.  

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard improves to 4-1 to open the season, with all four wins coming against opponents ranked inside the top-25.
  • Ronan Jachuck grabbed his first win of the spring season, dropping his opponent in straight sets during his first appearance at the No. 3 position.  
  • First-year, Valdemar Pape, picked up his first spring collegiate win, downing his opponent in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.
  • Sun and Jachuck have dominated doubles so far this season, improving to 4-1 following their 6-4 win in their first appearance at the No. 2 position
  • With the win, Harvard narrows Northwestern's lead in the all-time series to 10-9.
