CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a tightly contested hockey game between two top-10 teams, No. 8/8 Harvard men's ice hockey (15-6-1, 13-4-0 ECAC Hockey) fell, 3-0, to No. 2/2 Quinnipiac (21-3-3, 13-2-0 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Feb. 3) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded limited chances in the opening frame, with senior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson (22 saves) on his game in the early going.
Harvard's best chance came on a flurry midway through the frame, with junior forward
Sean Farrell's jam attempt kicked away by Quinnipiac goaltender Yaniv Perets (25 saves).
GIbson made his best save of the frame in the final minute with Quinnipiac on a late power play, smothering a one-timer from Ethan De Jong with less than 20 seconds to play.
Quinnipiac broke through on that same power play early in the second period as Sylar Brind'Amour put in a rebound at :53.
Harvard picked up its game, earning a power play and nearly tying the score just as the Quinnipiac penalty expired, but
John Farinacci's spinning backhand pass could not connect with
Alex Laferriere.
On another power play late in the period, Farinacci was set up by Farrell in the slot, but his shot from right in front was kicked away by Perets with just over six minutes to play in the period.
Harvard continued to push for the tying score in the third period, outshooting the Bobcats 11-6 in the final frame. But Quinnipiac benefitted from a good bounce midway through the period as Christophe Fillion corralled a loose puck in the high slot and fired a shot off the skate of a Harvard player and into the net at 9:24 to make it 2-0.
Quinnipiac added an empty netter at 19:56 to seal the win.
