Crimson Offense Dominates as Women's Water Polo Wins Both Games to Open Bruno Classic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 19 Harvard women's water polo won both its games to open the 2023 Bruno Classic. In the early matchup, the Crimson rode a late push to lift them over Marist by a score of 19-12 before defeating La Salle 18-7 to close out a successful game at Blodgett Pool. 

Game 1: Harvard 19, Marist 12 

In a back-and-forth game, the Crimson eventually pulled away late in the third quarter and continued their offensive explosion in the fourth quarter. No team had bigger than a two-goal cushion late into the third until Jaiden Miller, Sasha Constandse, and Brooke Hourigan added goals to help the Crimson grab a comfortable lead. 

Harvard Highlights 

•    13 different Crimson scored in the victory. 
•    Ruby Hodge was all over the scoresheet after tallying two goals, two assists, and two steals. 
•    Ella Prentice, Annabel Facey, Kaity Greenwald, and Borden Wahl all tallied one goal each. 
•    Sasha Constandse netted a hat-trick and an assist in the win. 
•    Dany Zapata had an impressive defensive game after tallying four steals. 
•    Captain Grace Thawley scored one goal while also drawing four knockouts. 
•    Brooke Hourigan had two helpers and five steals. 
•    Evan Tingler and Erin Kim added two tallies and two assists each. 
•    Jaiden Miller had another two-goal game. 

How it happened

•    Harvard led 7-5 after the first quarter. 
•    First-quarter goals from Evan Tingler, Borden Wahl, Jaiden Miller, Erin Kim, and Ruby Hodge helped give the Crimson a two-goal lead after a busy opening quarter. 
•    Marist battled back in the second quarter to make it 9-9 heading into the half. 
•    The Crimson offense exploded in the third quarter as they outscored Marist 6-2 with goals from Miller, Constandse, Prentice, Hourigan, and Mobley. 
•    The third quarter outburst was enough to help the Crimson cruise to the victory in the fourth quarter as they continued their domination outscoring Marist 4-1 in the final frame. 

Game 2: Harvard 18, La Salle 7 

The crimson offense picked up where they left off as they scored 28 goals in the final six quarters of play on Saturday. First-year Heidi Heffelfinger recorded an impressive six-goal game to close out her first collegiate day at Blodgett Pool. 

Harvard Highlights

•    Grace Thawley, Evan Tingler, and, Brooke Hourigan had a pair of goals. 
•    Kaity Greenwald netted two goals while adding three helpers to her season totals. 
•    Jaiden Miller added a goal late in the fourth quarter for her first of the game. 
•    Heidi Heffelfinger scored an impressive six goals. 
•    Ella Prentice and Josie Mobley each scored one goal.

How it Happened

•    The Crimson were in complete control from the first quarter on scoring ten goals in the first half. 
•    They followed that up by adding another eight to their totals. 

Next up 

The Crimson is back in action on Sunday with another two games against Pomona-Pitzer and LIU to close out the Bruno Classic. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+
