Driver Tallies 10 Strikeouts, Berger Homers, Baseball Falls to FAU in Series Opener, 7-3

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work, and junior Jake Berger hit his first home run of the season, but Harvard University baseball fell at Florida Atlantic University, 7-3, in the series opener on Friday night at FAU Stadium.
 
Beginning a four-game series and starting a spring break trip with eight games over nine days, the Crimson (1-8) scored three of the game's final four runs, including two runs in the ninth, but could not comeback after the Owls (8-6) opened the game with a 6-0 lead.
 
Driver posted his 10 strikeouts over 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks. First-year Callan Fang totaled seven strikeouts in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and one walk.
 
Junior Jake Berger led the way offensively for the Crimson, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Will Jacobsen registered a hit and an RBI, sophomore Sawyer Feller tallied an extra-base hit on a double.

  • The Crimson got on the board in the fifth inning as Berger sent a lead-off, solo home run over the right field wall, cutting the margin to 6-1. The Owls expanded their lead to 7-1 with a run in the sixth.
  • The Crimson offense plated two runs in the ninth to trim the lead further. Berger brought home a run with a sacrifice fly before Jacobsen drove in a run with a ground ball.
