WORCESTER, Mass. – Juniors
Riley Campbell and
Callie Hem each had four goals, and classmate
Maddie Barkate added two goals and a career high 12 draw controls to help Harvard earn a 15-12 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon (March 11) at Kuzniewski Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After surrendering an early goal, Harvard found its offense midway through the first quarter. Hem got things started for the Crimson with a free position goal from just left of center, hitting the right side of the net at 7:31 to tie the game at 1-1. On the next possession, Barkate gave Harvard the lead on the next possession, as Caroline Mullahy (three assists) found her cutting across the front of cage for a goal at 6:32.
- The two teams traded goals to end the first quarter, as first-year Hannah Shiels took a pass from Mullahy (who picked up a key ground ball) and scored from just in front of the net with 2:57 to play in the quarter. The two teams were tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes.
- Harvard put up four goals in the second quarter to take a 7-5 margin into the break, with Campbell scoring three goals in the frame. First it was Hem who scored on a free position shot at 11:52. Then Campbell added another free position goal at 11:30.
- Late in the quarter, Campbell put Harvard ahead on another free position opportunity, cutting to the net for a score at 5:46. Then Campbell struck again on Harvard's next possession, on another free position chance, this time stopping 10 feet short of the net for a shot at 4:52. Harvard led 7-5 at the break.
- Holy Cross rallied to tie the game three times in the second half, but each time Harvard had the answer.
- At 7-7, Hem cut into the circle from straight away and fired a low shot into the net at 10:20.
- At 8-8, Charley Meier scored on a free position opportunity at 7:29 cutting in between two closing Holy Cross defenders and beating the goalie to put the Crimson ahead.
- Barkate made a great pivot to lose a defender, then cut to the front of cage and fired a low shot in at 6:48 to make it 10-8.
- Then with Harvard up a player, Campbell scored her fourth of the game on a free position shot at 5:20.
- At 11-11 in the fourth quarter, Harvard scored three straight goals to put the game away for good. First-year Kate Gilliam scored her first of the day on a 20-yard run, scoring from right in front of the crease at 6:38.
- Junior Ilana Kofman scored the first of two consecutive goals off another great pass from Mullahy from behind the net with 5:32 to go.
- Then Kofman scored with a shot while being pushed to the ground in front of the net at 4:52 to make it 14-11.
